I’m not going to lie: I enjoy facebook. I really do. But sometimes, Facebook as a community and Facebook as a vector for people to be themselves annoys the ever-living sh*t out of me. Right now is one of those times.

Throughout the day I’ll check on my iphone to see if anyone has an interesting status update; it keeps my day moving and sometimes I need some kind of diversion from work. But today, I kept seeing “I like it in” updates, so I knew that “something was up,” as the kids would say.

Instead of asking anyone, I went to google and did some research.

“I like it on the floor,” some said. “I like it in my car.” It’s rather titilating, obviously, but I knew better when I saw my goody-goody cousin update her facebook with “I like it in the closet.”

So, again. I was on google, typed in “facebook i like it in” and pressed enter.

Apparently, today is “tell people where you put your purse in a status update” day. That’s all well and good, but it’s also “tell people where you put your purse in a status update AS A WAY TO PROMOTE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS” day.

Um. This sort of thing happened before with a copious amount of updates for bra/underwear color, but again…all the status would say would be “white” or, you know, whatever color the underwear/bra was. I took issue with this as well. Maybe you do (or did) too. If not, here’s my beef:

How can you claim to be promoting awareness by not mentioning the thing you want to make people more aware of? I am totally in favor of finding ways to reduce cancer’s hold on our society, no matter what kind, but…really? It’s like if I said right now that I wanted to bring awareness to eating disorders by eating all of my meals in front of people but in a healthy and regular manner…but didn’t say “this is my point.”

Someone said to me that just promoting breast cancer awareness outright will make people ignore it, but…again…half a day went by and took about six or seven updates minimum for me to notice this was a pattern and might be worth looking at. And most people totally ignored the status updates entirely. I don’t know what the answer is.

I’m grumpy, and I’m not sure how good any sort of campaign to remind people that breast cancer exists is. Do I want breast cancer to go away? Yes. Am I afraid of getting breast cancer? Yes, almost as afraid of it as I am of getting cervical cancer. But obscure and vaguely sexy updates on facebook? I don’t know, I get annoyed when a flock of people put up updates that come across like an inside joke that I have no hope of divining on my own.

Before I seem like a total grump, I’ll close by saying I am obviously grumpy because I don’t own or use a purse and therefore couldn’t “play” with the rest of them if I tried.

It’s been an exciting few days. And by exciting, I mean tiring. Tired and exciting. Something.

I don’t know.

We nearly hit a kid today on the way to work. That’ll fuck up your day right-quick. Thankfully Alex reacted quickly as I yelled “Watch out!” and the kid swerved his bike to avoid smacking into the right side of the car and skidding across the hood.

My heart was pounding out of my chest for a good five minutes or so. On my list of “awesome ways to start your day,” this doesn’t rank. At all. As I am sure most people would assume.

Thankfully everything else was more or less uneventful, minus a weird email from my manager sent to everyone that had clocked in late in the past few weeks. Work has been fine, but getting that email (I’ve been one minute late three times in the past few weeks, so it’s warranted by company standards) made me go “I really don’t want to be here anymore.” It’s kind of an empty desire, since work is fine and I’m not as stressed out as I was. But still.

Oh! And Alex got his insurance cards finally. He can now rest a little more easy, knowing he has something set up to help him out with his doctor bills. This is good news, and we are both happy.

Well. If not happy, we are at least contented about the insurance, which he has been without for two years now. So huzzah for that! Here’s hoping he doesn’t need to rely on it for anything too intense, though. That’d be nice.
